The State Bar of Texas runs a free, public, real-time directory of every active attorney in the state. Every Texas attorney has a unique eight-digit bar number. Take a screenshot. You will use this number to cross-check the bar listing against the firm's website, business cards, and engagement letter. The Texas Board of Legal Specialization is a separate body. It maintains a public list of attorneys who have earned the board certification in a specific area of law — including Immigration & Nationality Law. If the attorney is not on this list, they are not board certified — full stop. Many excellent immigration attorneys are not board certified and that is fine. In many Latin American countries a notario público is a licensed legal professional with the authority to handle complex matters. In the United States, a notary public is simply someone who witnesses signatures. A notary cannot give legal advice, cannot file immigration documents on your behalf, and cannot represent you in court. Anyone who tells you otherwise is committing a serious offense.
